It was, however, a terrifying sight for the rescue team when they first picked up a blind, deaf and severely matted 13-year-old Poodle named Prince Muttley.
Apparently, the dog’s owner was an elderly woman who had been unable to care for him for years. When signs of animal neglect became prominent, she eventually surrendered the dog to the Chicago-based rescue.
Before assessing Prince Muttley’s health, they had to get rid of his nasty fur covered in feces and debris. The handler had to tread carefully as it was difficult to distinguish the dog’s limbs from the layers of dreadlocks. But after hours of effort, the groom finally managed to get rid of all the hair weighing down the dog. With a rejuvenating bath, Prince Muttley looked like an adorable little charmer again!
Unfortunately, this senior dog’s medical report wasn’t all that exciting.
Prince is weak with several infections. He also suffers from oronasal fistula, which is a rather unpleasant manifestation of untreated dental disease and requires surgery. The prince was transferred to an orphanage with Imelda Corona and is already beaming like the happiest boy!
Imelda hopes Prince Muttley’s stunning transformation will inspire people to be kinder to elderly pets. She sums up her point in the choicest words – “Just because the dog no longer has teeth or has limited vision doesn’t mean he isn’t happier. Those two months or two years can essentially mean the world to the dog and they start to remember those last few years. The best years they’ve had. That makes it all worth it! ” We couldn’t agree more!
